Entry Classes and Guidance Notes
There are 6 entry classes:
Creative, Landscape, Monochrome, Traditional Colour, Nature, PhotoRealistic Colour.

Creative:
Creative is a class that allows the photographer to manipulate images by the use of montages, changing colour, form, shapes, sharpness, etc., to make an image more surreal or less realistic than it would otherwise be.

The use of HDR techniques without further montage or manipulation would not be included in this class.

Creative images should not be entered in any other classes than Creative.

Landscape:

Any rural, urban or coastal landscape image will be accepted in this category including Colour, Monochrome, Infra-red, HDR and Panoramic images.

The image must be from one capture. (HDR from a bracketed set of the same image and Panoramas from a panned set of the same scene are viewed as one capture).

The integrity of the subject must be maintained and the making of major physical changes to the landscape is not permitted. You may not, for example, move trees or import the sky from another image.

Monochrome:
A black and white image containing only various shades of grey, black or white. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain eligible for the monochrome class. However, a black and white work modified by partial toning or by the addition of one or more colours, becomes a colour work and is thus ineligible for the Monochrome class.

Creative Monochrome images should be entered in the Creative class.

Traditional Colour
A Traditional Colour image is one that has been created from a single capture and without major digital after work.

The integrity of the subject must be maintained and the making of major physical changes to the image is not permitted. You may not, for example, import parts from another image.

(HDR from a bracketed set of the same image and Panoramas from a panned set of the same scene are viewed as a single capture).

Nature:

(PAGB 2013 definition):

Nature photography depicts living, untamed animals and uncultivated plants in a natural habitat, geology and the wide diversity of natural phenomena, from insects to icebergs. Photographs of animals which are domesticated, as well as photographs of cultivated plants are ineligible.

Minimal evidence of humans is acceptable for nature subjects, such as barn owls or storks, adapting to an environment modified by humans, or natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves, reclaiming it.

The original image must have been taken by the photographer, whatever photographic medium is used. Any manipulation or modification to the original image is limited to minor retouching of blemishes and must not alter the content of the original scene.

After satisfying the above requirements, every effort should be made to use the highest level of artistic skill in all nature photographs.

Guidance Notes:
It is important to distinguish between nature photography competitions and wildlife photography competitions.

Nature photographers frequently take pictures of animals under controlled conditions in order to record species or behavior that would be difficult or impossible to record in the wild. Examples would be: moths caught in light traps, butterflies hatched from pupae, small mammals in cages, and amphibians or fish in tanks. Photographs of captive wild animals in zoos might also be considered to be proper subjects for nature photographers, although the environment should look as natural as possible and without human intrusion.

This class is designated as Nature, so all the above subjects and methods of photography are acceptable, as well as photographs of true wildlife.

Photorealistic Colour

A Photorealistic image is one that has been created from more than one image but resembles a single capture image or is a single image that has undergone a major physical change, but resembles a single capture image.

The ability to create seamlessly merged images is encouraged in this class, but the end image should resemble a single capture.
